My Cryotherapy Experience | Crxyo Wheaton
Last week I made an appointment with Crxyo Wheaton. Cryotherapy has been on my “to try” list for the past year. Earlier this month I also experienced ice baths for recovery. I wasn’t sure what to expect with Cryotherapy and if it would be as cold as the ice baths. For reference, the ice baths I participated in were for 3 minutes and in -55 degrees. In comparison, the Cryotherapy chamber was 3 minutes and in -250 degrees. The difference besides the temperature, is the intensity of the recovery options. The ice baths were more of a challenge for my body. My body is sensitive to extreme temperatures and having my skin in that cold of water was for sure a shock. With Cryo I didn’t feel cold while enduring the therapy. I also had more skin exposed and was not very red or pink after, which was a shock. I was instructed to slowly rotate in the chamber. By moving, I felt like my body was able to adapt to the drastic temperature change more easily as there was a more even distribution because the cold temps weren’t blasting one specific area of my body, but rather my entire body.
questions + Answers
What is Cryotherapy?
“Cryotherapy, sometimes known as cold therapy, is the local or general use of low temperatures in medical therapy.”
What Are the benefits of Cryotherapy?
Disclaimer: I am not a doctor and do not claim these are 100% nor that Cryo should be your medical treatment. Consult your doctor prior to starting Cryotherapy.
Can reduce migraine symptoms
Numb irritated nerves and reduce pain (more common in athletes)
Can help with symptoms of anxiety and depression
Can help with weight loss
Can reduce muscle fatigue
What are the risks of cryotherapy?
Skin irritation and is one of the most common risks. However, this shouldn’t be confused with the slight pink or red tone your skin will have a few minutes after the sessions. If the skin itches or burns, stop cryotherapy.
Do I have to do it for 3 minutes?
No, not at all! The first thing they said to me was if I was uncomfortable or wanted to stop at any point, just let them know!
What Do You wear?
Nothing, really. Okay- so don’t freak out (like I did). I was that person who went into the ice bath in leggings and a t-shirt because I was not wanting to commit to that much cold. Cryo is not the same. I was given long socks, special shoes, and gloves to protect my fingers and toes from the cold. It was suggested that I go in the tank nude or if I prefer to keep my undergarments on. Now my first thought was “OH MY GOD THIS WAS NOT THE DAY TO WEAR A THONG. MY ASS IS SO WHITE NO ONE CAN SEE THIS!” Spoiler alert: no one actually sees you in the undergarments or nude. The staff will provide a robe to wear for the walk from the changing room to the chamber then once you are inside, the robe comes off.

Whole Body Cryotherapy (this is what i did)
“You will stand in our Whole Body Chamber for 3 minutes. During this time cryogenically cooled air will be pushed into the chamber causing the air temperature to drop between negative 230 to negative 250 degrees fahrenheit. This will cause the body to draw blood to the heart and vital organs where it will become more oxygenated and nutrient dense. Once that blood is pumped back through your body it reduces inflammation, improves muscle tissue recovery, and boosts your immune system all while burning up to 800 calories. Oh and it makes you feel incredible!”
“Laying on your back in complete comfort, cryogenically cooled air will be blown onto your face for 6 minutes. This will cause the cells to produce more collagen reducing the sign of wrinkles, redness or skin irritation, and leave you glowing.”
“An ice pack on steroids to eliminate pain and reduce inflammation. We localize the treatment to draw blood away from the area so it becomes more oxygenated and nutritionally dense. As a result, the healing process speeds up.”
“Experience the ultimate detox while relaxing, relieving pain, and improving circulation with our full spectrum infrared sauna.”

Overall I enjoyed the experience. It wasn’t as cold as I expected it to be. My muscles felt relaxed after and it was overall quite peaceful. I am interested in seeing the longterm changes Cryo has on my body by integrating it into a regular recovery routine. I plan on testing this out and seeing what my body feels like after a hard workout. The day I went in for my treatment I had not worked out in quite a few days so my body wasn’t fatigued or particulate sore. I’ve committed to a membership and can’t wait to report back once I have more data and when I can try out the other services!
